Owen Wood is a world class maker and this is his story.

Owen became interested in making knives in 1972 and seven years later became South Africa's first professional knife maker. In 1980 he was involved in founding the Knifemakers' Guild of Southern Africa and was chairman of the organization for 10 years. Eventually his attention was drawn to the international knife making scene, and he has exhibited annually in the US since 1982. On a less regular basis he has exhibited in France Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

In 1999 Owen and his family moved from South Africa to Denver, Colorado, where he spent two years working for Spyderco, both in their research and development department, and running their Golden factory before returning to full-time knife making.

See the Awards Owen has received

But in the end it is Owen's approach to design that really makes him stand out. He sees the knife as a complete object, and he tries to design the entire knife, handle, scales, bolsters, pommel and blade into a fully integrated work of art. When he makes his steel he is thinking of how the pattern of the blade will integrate with the elements in the handle, and of course, the overall shape of the knife. In choosing material for a bolster or pommel he takes a similar approach.

This also applies to to the scale or handle material, particularly when it has strong directional qualities. Similarly he feels the engravers work should compliment the design as well. In collaborating with an engraver, Owen believes their ideas should run in a similar vein to his own in order to create a truly great piece. Owen also feels strongly about textures and levels of detail, that is the knife should hold a collectors' interest from all aspects. This includes shape and color as well as texture. Examples of this attention to detail include raised liners, chamfered corners, sunken back spacers, decorated pins or rivets and other similar design nuances.

Very rare first run Blackjack mamba made in USA 1987. The blade measures 8" by 1/4" thick with a satin finish. The handle is black Kraton with stainless steel tubes and glue. OAL: 15". The knife has never been used and is in excellent condition no sheath. Some Info I Found Re the Mamba:

The Mamba is the design that really is responsible for launching the entire BlackJack company. The model dates back to the 1970's when the first versions were made and sold from a gun and knife shop that was owned by former BlackJack CEO Mike Stewart. Most of those early knives were made by Mr. Stewart himself. The

first example was made by Mike Stewart and a would be knife maker by the name of Thomas Vincent Miller. At the time Mr. Miller was interested in becoming a knife maker but for some unknown reason seems to have lost interest shortly his involvement with the first Mamba knife. According to information I have recently been sent by a fellow collector, there were approx. 3,000 - 4,000, of the full size Mamba's made, beginning in 1987, and ending in 1993. There were approx. 50 of these done with a moly blade coating. I now believe that the green and black examples below, are moly coated not titanium coated, as I have previously stated. Recently former BlackJack CEO Mike Stewart responded to a question about the full size variant of the Mamba on in the BlackJack forum. Mike had this to say.

"CS-51 was a modified 5160. It had moly added for a bit more toughness. All of the vintage Mambas were all U.S. made , except for one batch of 300. That batch was made by Harumi Suzuki from AUS-8. We finished the blades in our Van Nuys shop and put on the handles. You can tell these from all the others. The blades were about .200' thick and were marked Japan. There were a number of runs of the Mamba.
The first run the Kraton handles were pinned on and glued down. The pins were actually hollow s.s. tubing that was flared. The next run had s.s. screw sets that held the handles in place. The balance of the runs have harder kraton handles that were held on with two large black Allen screws and a brass threaded tube. These Allen sets are what we are going to use on the E.O. The first run was built in our Chatsworth , Ca. shop. 1987. The second run was built in our Canoga Park shop in 1988. The third run was built in our Van Nuys, Ca. shop in 1989. The next two runs were also Van Nuys, Ca. shop in 1990 & 91. The final run was in the Effingham Il. shop in 1993. I think that the total production did not exceed 2500 units. In retrospect, That is not very many units and may explain why we don't see many on the secondary market."

Rare Wootz Damascus Lock-Back Folding Knife by the late Al Pendray. The unique Wootz blade measures 2.5" and is in excellent condition. Al said the hood on top of the blade is very very hard to make. The handle scales are bone? with an old mellow yellow look. The dovetailed bolsters are Mokume with lots of character. The knife measures 3.5" closed. This knife was owned, used, and carried by the late J W Denton. J W was a very well known and respected Loveless Dealer and authority. J W used the knife so much that he wore down the blade and it was replaced by Al Pendray before his death. The knife is old and used but the condition is excellent other than a few minor dents and scratches. The action is very smooth. Original leather pouch sheath included. I copied this piece of info below from a forum on Al Pendray. If there is a Mount Olympus of knifemakers, few would argue with giving the role of Zeus to Bill Moran. Al Pendray would almost certainly be Vulcan. The son of a Florida farrier, he leaves a legacy in the knife world beyond his beautiful and highly sought-after blades. Al Pendray is known as the Father of modern wootz, having participated in several metallurgical studies on the historic steel. Combining the science with his experience as a smith, Al reintroduced the process for making authentic wootz.

He was an ABS Master Smith, a Hall of Fame Member of that organization,as well as a former President. Al Pendray passed away today following years of declining health.

Al co-wrote (with materials scientist JD Verhoeven) the seminal work on the chemical and physical properties of wootz steel, “The Key Role of Impurities in Ancient Damascus Blades“. In it they examine the trace elements in historic pieces, and document how important these were, when combined with secret forging techniques, in producing a superior steel with with the archetypal wave pattern. The work is highly technical, but an interesting read nonetheless.

Within the piece is this historic-anthropological nugget. I always wondered how an historic technique (making true Damascus) was lost within recorded history. The authors explain:

One of the big mysteries of wootz Damascus steel has been why the art of making these blades was lost. The vanadium levels provide the basis for a theory. Based on our studies, it is clear that to produce the damascene patterns of a museum-quality wootz Damascus blade the smith would have to fulfill at least three requirements. First, the wootz ingot would have to have come from an ore deposit that provided significant levels of certain trace elements, notably, Cr, Mo, Nb, Mn, or V. This idea is consistent with the theory of some authors30 who believe the blades with good patterns were only produced from wootz ingots made in southern India, apparently around Hyderabad. Second, the data of Table IV confirm previous knowledge that wootz Damascus blades with good patterns are characterized by a high phosphorus level. This means that the ingots of these blades would be severely hot short, which explains why Breant’s9 19th century smiths in Paris could not forge wootz ingots. Therefore, as previously shown,15successful forging would require the development of heat-treating techniques that decarburized the surface in order to produce a ductile surface rim adequate to contain the hot-short interior regions. Third, a smith who developed a heat-treatment technique that allowed the hot-short ingots to be forged might still not have learned how to produce the surface patterns, because they do not appear until the surface decarb region is ground off the blades; this grinding process is not a simple matter.

The smiths that produced the high-quality blades would most likely have kept the process for making these blades a closely guarded secret to be passed on only to their apprentices. The smiths would be able to teach the apprentices the second and third points listed, but point one is something they would not have known. There is no difference in physical appearance between an ingot with the proper minor elements present and one without. Suppose that during several generations all of the ingots from India were coming from an ore body with the proper amount of minor elements present, and blades with good patterns were being produced. Then, after a few centuries, the ore source may have been exhausted or become inaccessible to the smithing community; therefore, the technique no longer worked. With time, the smiths who knew about the technique died out without passing it on to their apprentices (since it no longer worked), so even if a similar source was later found, the knowledge was no longer around to exploit it. The possible validity of this theory could be examined if data were available on the level of carbide-forming elements in the various ore deposits in India used to produce wootz steel.

The whole piece is worth a read. Through this work, as well as through the many makers he mentored, Al’s vast knowledge lives on and will continue to benefit the knife world for generations to come.

Blade: 12"

OAL: 17.5"
Description: Massive handmade Bowie by one of the most famous knife makers ever Gil Hibben. The Alaska logo dates this knife between 1970 and 1975 Vietnam era. This monster blade is made of forged 440-c s.s. and is over a quarter inch thick by 2.5" wide. It has a razor sharp edge with a super deep mirror polish finish.
